It’s utilised by many businesses as an effective way of moving large, heavy and multiple items safely.

This method reduces handling, speeds up distribution and lowers the risk of product damage. In this helpful guide, we’ll explain how pallet delivery works, covering everything from load sizes to distribution networks, and highlighting the key benefits it offers to businesses.

What is a Pallet?

Starting with the basics, a pallet is a flat (and often square) standard structure onto which companies will place their goods. Numerous sizes are in circulation, but the 1200 x 1000 x 150mm is considered by most to be the standard UK size. The Euro standard is 1200 x 800 a 150mm.

Around 55million timber pallet units are produced each year in the UK. This demonstrates how pallets are not just helpful but an absolute necessity for shipping. Pallets are often used in warehouses to make the movement and storage of individual items easier and more straightforward. They are also handy when transporting goods around the country, in Europe or around the world.

What is Pallet Delivery?

What is pallet delivery? In simple terms, the meaning of pallet delivery is exactly what it says on the tin. Specialist companies with lots of expertise will regularly collect and distribute pallets from business owners all around the country. At LTS, we offer a comprehensive range of logistics-related pallet services, from full and part load distribution through to palletised consignments.

Our team will always keep goods safe too, and we use secure transport tracking technology to ensure we know exactly where each vehicle is located in real time. As part of our service, we can provide same-day deliveries from a single pallet to a full load. Our team works hard to guarantee total customer satisfaction for each and every consignment, regardless of the challenges.

So, in a nutshell, pallet delivery is the process of moving goods from one place to another, on a pallet. Pallet shipping has become the most common form of distribution in the world.

How Does Pallet Delivery Work: A Step-by-Step Process

1. The process begins by contacting a pallet transport specialist and alerting them to a pallet collection and delivery that needs picking up. This can be done through telephone, email or via a specialist online portal. Depending on volume, some customers will have a daily scheduled collection.

2. The pallet shipping specialists will then collect the order at the time, place or date required by the client. Some firms will charge more for collections in the evening or at weekends. Therefore, it’s sensible to check rates before placing an order.

3. The pallets then go to a distribution warehouse, where in most instances, they are consolidated into routes for the delivery drivers. Warehouse staff will then use forklift trucks to load the pallets onto trucks carefully. Just like LTS, the distribution vehicles will then leave the warehouse on schedule to ensure all pallets reach their destinations on time.

4. Many pallet delivery firms will offer a tracking service to their clients. That often comes in the form of a web link people can click to check on the progress of their order.

5. Most specialists aim to make deliveries within 24 or 48 hours, depending on the requirements of their clients and the service level paid for. However, it can take longer to ship pallets abroad, especially if ocean, air and rail transport become part of the equation.

Shipping Large Items: Pallet Delivery & Load Size Explained

If you need to send heavy or unusually bulky items, pallet delivery is an excellent option. It’s ideal for awkward items such as car parts, furniture and heavy machinery. Pallets keep items of all sizes safe and secure.

It’s essential to know your load size to help you pick the right pallet and save on expenses. Load size options include a full pallet (up to 2.2m tall), a light pallet (same size as a full pallet but with a lower weight limit) and a quarter pallet (under 60cm high and 150kg, designed for smaller loads).

Sure! Using a pallet courier is simplicity itself, from the moment the business owner calls a specialist or books a pallet collection online. Below, there is a straightforward guide that explains everything in detail. This should help to dispel any myths and eliminate misconceptions.

How Much Does Pallet Delivery Cost?

The cost of pallet delivery depends on several factors, including the size of the pallet, the weight of the load and the delivery distance. A full pallet travelling overseas will cost more than a small quarter pallet being sent locally. Other factors that affect price include whether you choose standard, next-day or timed delivery and if the shipment is going abroad, customs and international freight charges will also apply.

Types of Pallet Delivery

There are two main types of pallets used for delivery, such as stringer and block pallets. Stringer pallets are best for heavy loads as they have long boards to help with weight distribution. Block pallets are designed for lighter loads and use solid wooden blocks at the base to provide a sturdy base during transport.

Pallet Distribution Networks

As most people will understand, it’s difficult for a company with one base to make 24-hour pallet deliveries all over the country. The firm would need hundreds of trucks and drivers. So, it’s not realistic for pallet delivery companies to make promises about fast deliveries without working with others. Relatively cheap pallet delivery is only possible with the network setup.

A pallet distribution network often comprises of many companies working closely together. They do this to provide efficient, cost-effective and comprehensive solutions to their customers. Each group, company or facility will have designated postcode areas to which they deliver and collect goods. If a customer from another part of the country needs to ship pallets to those locations, the orders will get passed to that particular team.

Transport Hubs Located In Strategic Points Around The Country

In most instances, pallet transport experts will open hubs in the main cities around the country to facilitate shipping. Let’s take a look at an example:

John owns a children’s toy company, and he needs to deliver a pallet of goods to a client in London. John’s firm is based in Liverpool, and so it’s a long distance to travel. He calls the pallet courier from Liverpool, and they come and collect the items before heading back to base. Delivering the pallet from that location is less than convenient. However, luckily, the carrier has a hub in Birmingham which is halfway to the destination. So, the experts send the pallet to Birmingham first. Delivery drivers from that location then take the item to its endpoint and keep to their schedule. You get the idea, right?

Hub and Spoke Distribution

In the industry, pallet shipping firms refer to that method as the Hub and Spoke system for obvious reasons. Time and time again, companies have proved that this strategy reduces the number of vehicles required and increases the average load per truck.

Results in More Reliable 24 hour Delivery

Pallet delivery services that use this system become far more reliable when offering 24-hour shipping. The method is also used by other transportation companies focusing on smaller items around the country.

In most instances, pallet distribution networks are run by a single brand. For example, here at LTS, we are part of the TPN network. The main hubs are operated by a central firm, while logistics companies like LTS both deliver to and collect from these hubs. If you plan to use a pallet distribution network long-term, take the time to research how individual systems work.

The Pallet Network Hub

Pallet Distribution Networks and How They Operate

Do I Need to use a Pallet Distribution Network?

That is something individual business owners have to answer for themselves. If they understand all the ins and outs, the solution should become apparent. In most situations, pallet deliveries are particularly suitable for:

  • 1-5 pallet consignments
  • Heavy goods
  • Regular quantities
  • Fragile goods
  • Anything that requires fast and economical shipping

However, lots of firms choose to send all manner of items on pallets these days. So, there are few limits when it comes to the type of products.

Even Entrepreneurs use a Pallet Courier

Most entrepreneurs and their associates opt for a pallet distribution network when they start to accept a considerable number of orders for the same product. Sending all those items separately would cost a small fortune. In that situation, pallet couriers often become the company’s best friend.

Benefits of Using Pallet Delivery

For businesses, pallet delivery provides several key advantages. It’s a secure, reliable and cost-effective way of shipping goods. Securing items on a pallet makes large loads easier to handle, reducing the risk of damage in transit. There’s also the benefit of faster delivery as pallets can be transported through a hub and spoke distribution network. Pallet delivery is also scalable, meaning businesses can send anything from a single pallet to full loads while still enjoying the same reliability and cost-efficiency. Pallets can also be tracked to provide businesses and consumers alike with peace of mind in being able to see the location of their pallets.

Preparing Goods for Pallet Delivery

The process of preparing items for pallet delivery is essential to keep them safe during transport. Goods should be stacked evenly on a pallet with heavier products at the bottom and lighter ones on top just like you would when you visit the supermarket. Shrink wrap, straps or banding to hold everything tightly in place, preventing movement in transit. For fragile or valuable goods, add extra protection such as corner boards, bubble wrap or pallet covers.

Package vs Pallet Delivery

When deciding between the two, consider the weight and volume of your goods, how quickly they need to arrive, and the overall shipping cost. For small, lightweight items, package delivery is often the simplest option. For bulkier or multiple items, pallet delivery provides greater protection, efficiency and value.

LTS GLOBAL SOLUTIONS DRIVES SUSTAINABILITY WITH FIRST ELECTRIC TRUCK https://www.ltsglobalsolutions.com/blog/lts-global-solutions-drives-sustainability-with-first-electric-truck/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 16:29:52 +0000 https://www.ltsglobalsolutions.com/?p=9065 Logistics and supply chain solutions specialists LTS Global Solutions has added its first electric truck to its fleet as it looks to drive forward its sustainability goals.

Working within a 50 miles radius of the company’s 130,000 sq. ft site in Coleshill, Warwickshire, the Volvo FM Electric truck will be primarily utilised for collections and deliveries on behalf of LTS’ retail, automotive and construction customers across the West Midlands.

It is currently only the second all-electric Volvo truck to be operating within the Birmingham area.

Following a three-week trial, the vehicle was purchased from Birmingham-based Hartshorne Group, one of the leading commercial vehicle distributors for the West Midlands, East Midlands, Shropshire, and Staffordshire with which LTS Global Solutions has had a relationship with for the past 10 years.

With an operational range of 280 kilometres, the truck boasts a six-battery energy storage capacity to enable enhanced range, as well as three electric motors to provide instant power and energy savings. The charge time for the vehicles is between 8-10 hours and is charged using a 46-amp charger.

Also featured on the Volvo FM Electric is an I-shift gearbox, globetrotted cab, Volvo dynamic steering as well as front and rear air suspension.

The vehicle is on a full repair and maintenance contract with Hartshorne Group.

James Cowen, Managing Director at Hartshorne, said: “The Hartshorne Group are delighted to have been able to support the LTS team with their first Volvo Electric Truck, as they embark upon leading the change towards a more sustainable future.”

LTS Global Solutions has always operated an extremely stringent fleet replacement programme which sees older trucks replaced with newer more fuel-efficient vehicles. The Volvo FM Electric provides an added boost to this ongoing campaign.

To take a robust and data-led approach to reducing its operational carbon footprint, LTS Global Solutions has partnered with internationally recognised carbon reduction and net zero specialists Planet Mark to work towards achieving Planet Mark Business Certification – which certifies and recognises progress in reducing carbon emissions across Scopes 1, 2 and core elements of Scope 3.

Operating at the centre of climate tech, advisory and legislation, Planet Mark brings together the best of people, technology and nature with a unified model that helps their 800+ members achieve tangible business results that stand for meaningful climate action.

By harnessing accurate carbon data analysis and reporting, Planet Mark will require LTS Global Solutions to make annual carbon reductions of at least 2.5%, targeting 5%. The Planet Mark measurement methodology is fully aligned to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and all data is verified with evidence provided by LTS Global Solutions, which will be captured from across its operations. Business Certification allows for boosting operational efficiency and identifying potential cost savings.

To promote the partnership between the two businesses, LTS Global Solutions’ new Volvo FM Electric truck is liveried in LTS’ brand colours, along with the Planet Mark logo.  Additionally, to reinforce its message, the vehicle is proudly emblazoned with the words ‘I’m Electric’ for all to see.

Dave Hands, Managing Director at LTS Global Solutions commented: “Making positive contributions to reducing our emissions is something that is continually top of mind at LTS Global Solutions and an ethos which we look to apply to every aspect of our operation.

“From replacing vehicles on a three-year cycle to the latest models to completing our recent move into a state-of-the-art, purpose built Net Zero carbon in construction facility, we are always looking at new and innovative ways to improve our carbon footprint. Adding a Volvo FM Electric truck to our fleet with the help of Hartshorne Group is the latest step on our sustainability journey.

“While the 280km range of the vehicle has its limitations in terms of its long-haul capabilities, it will still prove ideal for collection and delivery within the region where it will be applied, and we are very much looking forward to seeing it in action, out on the road.

Dave continued: “This addition to our fleet is yet another positive milestone for the business and we are incredibly proud to be showcasing our commitment to embracing the latest vehicle technologies currently on the market by purchasing the Volvo FM Electric.”

Why It Makes Sense to Choose A Dedicated Palletised Delivery Network https://www.ltsglobalsolutions.com/blog/dedicated-palletised-delivery/ Thu, 01 Sep 2022 08:05:50 +0000 https://ltsglobalsolutions.com/?p=6636 Is your current method of distribution as efficient as it could be? Palletised delivery networks are the most effective way of transporting and storing a wide range of goods quickly, economically and safely, allowing your business to save time and money. If you are not using a dedicated palletised delivery network, here’s a quick guide to the benefits it brings!

Top benefits of a dedicated palletised delivery network

Saves money – using a dedicated delivery network means you can ship a large number of goods while reducing the risk of damage. Not only that, but the right logistics company can do this at a low cost when compared to other methods of shipping large quantities of goods, such as a local courier. Not only that, but you can also benefit from full and part-load options. Full loads are where consignments fill a truck, increasing efficiency for larger amounts of goods. Part load is where goods share space in the same truck with other businesses, saving money when sending smaller quantities.

Minimises damages – when goods are packed on a pallet, they are stable and secure. Pallets are designed in such a way that they are easy to move using a forklift, while the goods on them are secured with strapping or shrink wrap. Your goods will not fall over during transit, and loading and offloading is a straightforward process.

Efficient – due to the uniform size and shape of palletised freight, handling all types of products is easy. This includes fragile items. Pallets can be offloaded and moved quickly and efficiently, meaning faster collections, deliveries, and warehouse organisation.

Customer satisfaction – using a dedicated palletised delivery network means your consignments will reach their destination securely and on time. This is because all the systems are in place for the smooth organisation of pallet shipments around the country, Europe and beyond. When your customers can rely upon your speedy delivery service, it boosts your reputation and keeps your customers coming back.

What to look for in a dedicated palletised delivery provider

If you have decided to make the change to palletised freight, choosing a reliable logistics company will ensure your shipping operations run smoothly.

At LTS, we have decades of experience in handling palletised freight, and we are proud partners of The Pallet Network (TPN). The TPN makes palletised freight distribution quick and efficient due to the network of 130 depots strategically located across the country. No matter what types of goods you ship, be it fragile or bulky items, we have the facilities to handle them with care.

Whatever the size of your company, we can design a shipping solution that keeps costs low while providing maximum benefits. This could include using full or part loads, timed or next-day deliveries, cost-effective ways to ship to Europe, and other options. We also have advanced tracking systems and secure warehousing, as well as a zero-tolerance policy on loss or damage.

The top 5 ways palletised freight can streamline your business https://www.ltsglobalsolutions.com/blog/palletised-freight-streamline-your-business/ Wed, 03 Nov 2021 09:55:17 +0000 https://ltsglobalsolutions.com/?p=6407 A pallet is a simple but clever way to move volumes of goods from A to B. Made from wood, plastic or metal, a pallet is a strong but lightweight platform onto which goods can be placed and secured. The gaps in a pallet’s structure are the perfect size for forklifts, so moving them on and off trucks or within warehouses is easy. For this reason, palletised freight is the most popular way of transporting goods. Here are the top five ways palletised freight can streamline your business.

1. Reduces time spent loading and off-loading

Without a pallet, goods need to be moved on and off vehicles and stored in warehousing one box at a time. Pallets allow goods to be moved in bulk, considerably reducing the time it takes to fill or empty a truck and makes storing of consignments efficient.

2. Best use of space

Pallets are stackable, so they allow more vertical space to be used either inside vehicles or warehousing. This means savings can be made on shipping costs, as fewer shipments need to be made to send the same volume of goods. It also makes organising shipments easier, as space can be calculated in advance.

3. Lowers risk of damages

A well-wrapped pallet of goods is less likely to become damaged than loose boxes. Goods are secure when in transit, as well as when on or off-loaded and stored. This means that you won’t lose money replacing damaged items, customers won’t be disappointed with their purchases, and they will return to buy from your business again.

4. Efficient distribution network

There are distribution networks in place that make palletised freight fast and efficient. One example is The Pallet Network (TPN), which has strategically placed regional hubs and depots that allow for a range of delivery options such as timed and next day, while reducing the milage of vehicles on the road. This means your customers can rely on your company to get their goods delivered reliably and consistently.

5. Lowers Costs

All of the benefits of using pallets to ship freight lead to one, over-arching benefit, and that is lowering costs. The many ways in which palletised freight can streamline your business bring the added benefit of lessening the cost involved in other types of shipping, increasing your bottom line. These savings could be used to invest in other projects that grow your business further.

Why LTS is your perfect partner for palletised freight

At LTS, our experience in the haulage industry counts. We are proud members of TPN, so we can pass those benefits onto our customers. Whatever the size of your business, we can create a tailored shipping solution that helps keep costs low while bringing maximum benefits. That could mean using full or part load consignments, timed or next day deliveries, cost-effective ways to ship to Europe and more.

Why should you use pallet distribution for your business? LTS Explains https://www.ltsglobalsolutions.com/blog/why-should-you-use-pallet-distribution-for-your-business-lts-explains/ Tue, 14 Sep 2021 06:00:00 +0000 https://ltsglobalsolutions.com/?p=6385 The humble pallet is often taken for granted, yet using pallets for distribution brings many benefits. A pallet is a wooden platform upon which goods can be placed and wrapped. They are made to standard sizes, so they are easy to move and strong enough to carry a wide variety of goods. Palletised shipments are the most popular method of distribution in the world, and with good reason. If you have been considering palletised freight for your business, here’s why you should give it a try!

Fast and Efficient Deliveries

Networks such as TPN (The Pallet Network) are designed specifically for moving palletised freight nationwide. At LTS, we are partnered with TPN, so can pass all the advantages on to our customers.

TPN has strategically located regional hubs and depots, making moving freight economical, efficient and reduces mileage and emissions. With palletised freight, you can benefit from timed, 24-and-48-hour deliveries, secure warehousing, and electronic tracking throughout from collection to delivery.

Increased customer service

The benefits of palletised freight mean you can provide different delivery options for your customers, give accurate information of transit times, as well as ensuring that goods arrive in good condition.

Minimises Damages

Pallets are sturdy and designed with gaps that fit a forklift truck. This means that when goods are packaged and put on a pallet, they can be loaded and offloaded onto trucks, and moved around warehouse facilities with ease, lessening damages.

Pallets are a safe way to look after goods while in transit, and special care can be taken with fragile or sensitive freight. Pallets that have similar types of goods can be grouped together, this makes handling these types of goods much more efficient.

Full and Part Load Options

Palletised freight is shipped in standard dimensions, typically 120 cm x 100 cm x 220 cm. This creates ‘blocks’ that can easily be measured to efficiently fill a truck or container. This means that if your goods are on a pallet, you can maximise all space available if you have large volumes, by choosing full load. Or, to save money when sending smaller amounts of goods, you can share space with other businesses in the same truck.

Let LTS handle your Palletised Freight

LTS are members of TPN, so we have the facilities in place to provide comprehensive palletised freight options for any size of business. As such, we can offer full and part loads, next day deliveries, secure warehousing and tracking on every consignment. We can also tailor a service to meet your specific business requirements.

If you are sending bulky or fragile items, we have the expertise to handle them with care. If you are not sure whether palletised freight is right for your business, why not give us a call? Our team will advise you on finding the best solutions. Get in touch!

Top Benefits of a Tailored Distribution Service with LTS! https://www.ltsglobalsolutions.com/blog/benefits-of-a-tailored-distribution-service/ Wed, 23 Jun 2021 10:16:49 +0000 https://ltsglobalsolutions.com/?p=6335 Have you ever considered a tailored distribution service for your business? Whether you send single or one-off consignments, or regular full loads, having a service designed around your business needs can make a big difference. Here are some top reasons why you should choose a tailored distribution service over standard shipping options.

Improved Performance across your Operations

Possibly the best benefit of tailored distribution is that it can be designed to meet the exact needs of your business. For example, you may need a flexible approach that allows you to consolidate consignments where possible, or you may need a combination of air, sea or road freight. Maybe you need it all! Having a team of experts to design a service that meets your needs means you can offer better services to your customers, improve efficiency, and reduce your costs.

That’s not all. By outsourcing your logistics to a third party, you not only get a tailored service, but it also frees up time and resources that you can use to develop your business.

Security of Supply

When your business logistics are bespoke, you know that your consignments are well looked after. This increases the security of supply. At LTS, we use advanced tracking systems so our tailored distribution customers always know exactly where their consignments are at all times, and when they have been delivered.

Top 5 Reasons Why The Pallet Network (TPN) is good for Business https://www.ltsglobalsolutions.com/blog/top-5-reasons-why-pallet-network-tpn-is-good-for-business/ Wed, 09 Jun 2021 09:02:05 +0000 https://ltsglobalsolutions.com/?p=6327 Have you ever heard of The Pallet Network? It is an efficient distribution network for palletised freight in the UK and Europe. If you send consignments on pallets, you may already be getting the benefits of TPN! Here’s how it works and why it is good for your business.

Who is TPN?

TPN makes the distribution of palletised freight fast and efficient. They have a network of 130 purpose-built sorting hubs and depots at strategic locations throughout the country and are partnered with over 100 top logistics companies to make sure every corner of the UK is within reach.

TPN stands out for its performance. The hub at Minworth alone can unload 57 trucks simultaneously, handles a staggering 20,000 pallets per night, and is optimised by artificial intelligence! This innovation means TPN is ahead of the game in providing logistics services, and it is always looking for new ways to develop models that further improve the industry.

5 Benefits of using TPN

1. Every partner of TPN, including LTS, is annually audited to make sure that only the best companies with the highest standards are using the network. This means that when you choose a logistics company that is a TPN partner, you know that your consignments are in safe hands.

2. Using TPN partners, you benefit from a zero-tolerance policy on loss or damage to your consignments. With advanced tracking systems, time-stamping and electronic proof of delivery, you always know exactly where your goods are. This also allows you to communicate information to your customers, or those who are receiving your consignments.

3. If you have oversized, bulky or fragile freight, or you are sending goods that require specialist conditions such as chilled or ambient temperatures, TPN have the facilities to handle it with ease.

4. With the location of TPN hubs at strategic places around the country, your freight can travel with less mileage and fewer emissions. Not only does this mean that your consignments spend less time travelling, but your business is lowering its carbon footprint too.

5. Perhaps the best benefit of using a logistics company that’s partnered with TPN, is the speed and efficiency of which you can get consignments to their destinations. The TPN is the most efficient way to move pallets anywhere in the UK overnight. This helps you to keep your business running smoothly and enables you to provide an excellent service to your customers.

LTS are proud to be members of The Pallet Network, as we can pass all those benefits onto our own customers and offer the most competitive prices. We offer a range of service options, including timed and next day deliveries, oversized freight, tail lift, economy and much more. Using TPN allows us to offer excellent levels of service as standard, so you always know what to expect when you use us for your palletised freight.
