{"id":96,"date":"2017-05-05T14:59:13","date_gmt":"2017-05-05T13:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ltsdistribution.co.uk\/blog\/?p=96"},"modified":"2025-08-13T16:35:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-13T15:35:06","slug":"the-uks-most-dangerous-roads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ltsglobalsolutions.com\/blog\/the-uks-most-dangerous-roads\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Of the UK\u2019s Most Dangerous Roads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While Britain may have roads in better conditions than in some other nations, it\u2019s no secret that some of the tarmac and concrete surfaces that we drive on each day aren\u2019t what we would call \u201cin good condition\u201d!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In general, though, our councils and the Highways Agency do a good job of keeping the majority of our road networks well-maintained and will fill any potholes that get discovered. The thing is, despite ongoing maintenance occurring on most of our road networks, some roads are rather dangerous to drive on in certain conditions.<\/p>\n<p>There is no denying that Britain has many scenic routes that anyone with a vehicle can enjoy these days, especially in the middle of summer and on bright days. However, some of those famous roads can also be known as accident blackspots for various reasons.<\/p>\n<p>In no particular order, here are ten of the United Kingdom&#8217;s most dangerous roads, and the reasons why it makes sense to take extra caution when driving on them:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h2><b> The Cat and Fiddle road, A537, England<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7292 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ltsglobalsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cat-and-fiddle-road.jpg\" alt=\"Cat and Fiddle Road\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ltsglobalsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cat-and-fiddle-road.jpg 640w, https:\/\/ltsglobalsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/cat-and-fiddle-road-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 640px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is a stretch of road on the A537 which is around 7.5 miles long. It is known locally as the \u201cCat and Fiddle\u201d road, named after a popular local pub of the same name located at the summit of the road.<\/p>\n<p>Located between Buxton in Derbyshire and Macclesfield in Cheshire, the Cat and Fiddle road is of a single carriage way and features some stunning views of the Greater Manchester conurbation. The only trouble is, the road features a plethora of snaking corners, and many people have lost control of their vehicles at speed on the A537.<\/p>\n<p>Some improvements have helped to make the road safer, such as the installation of motorcycle crash barriers and average speed safety cameras. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurorap.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/britisheurorapresults2016-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to EuroRAP<\/a> (European Road Assessment Programme), it is no longer at the top spot of Britain\u2019s most dangerous roads because of those improvements.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h2><b> A285, England<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Back in 2014, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/britain-s-most-dangerous-road-revealed-as-a285-between-chichester-and-petworth-9835555.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Independent<\/a> wrote an article about the A285, a 12-mile stretch of road between Chichester and Petworth. Linking the A27 with the A272, the A285 was (and still is) regarded as one of Britain\u2019s \u201cpersistently higher risk roads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EuroRAP states that 39% of the crashes on that stretch of road involved a motorcycle and 22% of them occurred at junctions. So, what makes the A285 such a dangerous road? Well, the problem is down to the fact that it has quite a lot of bends in the road. As you can imagine, bends and high-speed driving don\u2019t mix too well, and if you add bad weather into the equation, accidents could even become fatalities.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\n<h2><b> A18, England<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The A18 is a stretch of road in Lincolnshire that spans 10 miles from Laceby to Ludborough, near Grimsby. According to figures from the Road Safety Foundation, it\u2019s described as a rural route that is tree-lined, and is also narrow and winding.<\/p>\n<p>44% of the accidents that have occurred on the A18 so far have involved \u201crun-off\u201d crash types; this is where vehicles leave the carriageway and end up in a ditch or private land, for example. During 2012 to 2014, there were 16 fatal or serious crashes on the A18 road.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\n<h2><b> Hardknott Pass, England<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Hardknott Pass is a hill pass that serves as a direct route between Eskdale and the Duddon Valley in Cumbria\u2019s Lake District National Park. With a maximum gradient of 33%, it is one of Britain\u2019s steepest roads.<\/p>\n<p>A narrow road with severe bends, the route is virtually impassable during winter and is only suitable for cars and motorcycles <a href=\"https:\/\/ltsglobalsolutions.com\/moving-your-goods\/\">and not road transport services<\/a>. A series of hairpin bends make it rather tough to see the road ahead in places, and so drivers on the Hardknott Pass are urged to be vigilant and drive slowly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2413853\/Tourist-rolled-500ft-steep-mountain-pass-Lake-District-SURVIVED.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to an article by the Daily Mail<\/a>, a tourist managed to survive a 500-foot roll down a hill in her car on the Hardknott Pass when one of the vehicle\u2019s tyres blew!<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>\n<h2><b> Rosedale Chimney, England<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7297 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ltsglobalsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/rosedale-chimeny-from-the-opposite-valley-1024x698-1.jpg\" alt=\"Rosedale Chimeny from the opposite valley\" width=\"1024\" height=\"698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ltsglobalsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/rosedale-chimeny-from-the-opposite-valley-1024x698-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ltsglobalsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/rosedale-chimeny-from-the-opposite-valley-1024x698-1-980x668.jpg 980w, https:\/\/ltsglobalsolutions.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/rosedale-chimeny-from-the-opposite-valley-1024x698-1-480x327.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A tie with Hardknott Pass is another steep road, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dangerousroads.org\/europe\/england\/2303-rosedale-chimney.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rosedale Chimney<\/a> located in the North York Moors national park in Yorkshire.<\/p>\n<p>Another route with a 33% gradient, it\u2019s one of England\u2019s most challenging roads, and it\u2019s advised only cars with modern and functioning brakes drive on it! As with Hardknott Pass, drivers should not travel on it during snowy or icy conditions for obvious reasons. There are signs up on the pass warning lorries and caravans to avoid driving on it.<\/p>\n<p>Rosedale Chimney is also a popular route for cyclists who relish the challenge of cycling UP the one-mile long road.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>\n<h2><b> A361, England<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The A361 is actually 195 miles long, but the most dangerous part happens to be the route that spans Chipping Norton to Banbury in Oxfordshire. According to EuroRAP, the single carriageway constructed road is a notorious hotspot for accidents. Their statistics state that an unnerving 36% (more than one-third) of all accidents on the A361 between Chipping Norton and Banbury involve pedestrians and cyclists.<\/p>\n<p>27% of the accidents were caused at junctions, while 23% were run-offs. Between 2012 and 2014, there were unfortunately 22 fatal or serious accidents on that stretch of road. In the narrow and winding village of South Newington, one resident told the Banbury Guardian that the village has \u201ca lot of speeding traffic going through the village that only brakes at the last minute before the corners.\u201d<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>\n<h2><b> Bealach na B\u00e0, Scotland<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dangerousroads.org\/europe\/scotland\/60-bealach-na-ba-scotland.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bealach na B\u00e0<\/a> is a hilly road located in the Scotland Highlands. The single carriage route is the third-highest in Scotland, with an elevation of 2,054 feet above sea level. It features a series of hairpin bends, much like what you\u2019d find in the Swiss Alps.<\/p>\n<p>It makes the list because it\u2019s so narrow, with many sharp bends and steep gradients. The road to the Applecross peninsula even has signs warning learner drivers, large vehicles, and caravans to avoid driving on it!<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>\n<h2><b> Antrim Coast Road, A2, Northern Ireland<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Over in Northern Ireland, there is the picturesque <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-northern-ireland-22889365\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antrim Coast Road<\/a> which is actually a part of the A2. Built by ambitious Victorians and completed in 1842, the Antrim Coast Road is dangerous as it is beautiful. That\u2019s because it got built beneath towering cliff edges, and, as you can imagine, coastal erosion has meant that falling rocks are a common problem there.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2013, over \u00a3600,000 has been spent on improving the route to make it safer for motorists.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>\n<h2><b> A44, Wales<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In 2015, it was reported that a stretch of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/a44-between-llangurig-aberystwyth-revealed-8049947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A44 between Llangurig and Aberystwyth<\/a> in Mid Wales was (and still is) one of the country\u2019s most dangerous roads. During 2011 to 2013, 54% of all accidents on that part of the A44 were run-offs.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s considered a dangerous route due to the fact that it\u2019s a rural road and often poses hazards usually unseen on motorways or other national roads, for example.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li>\n<h2><b> A643, England<\/b><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Last, but not least, there is the A643 between Brighouse and Morley. EuroRAP recorded that the single carriageway road had 11 fatal or serious accidents during 2012 to 2014. Plus, 36% of all accidents sadly involved pedestrians and motorcycles.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Do you know of any dangerous roads near you?
